SPRING AWAKENINGSpring Awakening was performed at Eltham College Performance Centre on November 5th, 6th and 7th, 2009. SYNOPSIS
Based on Franz Wedekind’s tragedy, Jeremy Ives and Shane Sanfilippo’s adaptation of Spring Awakening focuses on eight adolescents and the adults that control their lives. The relevant adaptation reflects themes that are still prominent in today’s society including physical and sexual abuse, drug and alcohol dependency, sex, suicide, confusion over sexuality, school pressures and most importantly, relationships. The play Spring Awakening follows eight school aged teens who all undergo personal journeys throughout the play. Living in a small isolated village, we follow the characters on a journey from discovering their first loves, to dealing with sexual urges – Spring Awakening is relevant to today’s audiences due to its controversial and topical themes. From the beginning of the play we are catapulted into the lives of the eight teenagers: Melchior, Moritz, Wendla, Ilsa, Hans, Ernst, Thea and Martha. We meet their parents, their teachers, and their moral compass and ultimately discover what’s going on inside them during the turbulent and eventful time that is adolescence. CAST
